Session Overview:

The Office of Academic, Faculty, and Student Affairs (AFSA) will be hosting New Faculty Orientation as a supplement to the orientation that is provided by Human Resources at each faculty member’s hire date. The AFSA New Faculty Orientation is catered specifically to the faculty with introductions of people and resources that may be of help in their growth and advancement during their time of employment with UTHSC.

This session is for all new faculty hired since January 2014 who DID NOT attend New Faculty Orientation in March 2014.

A light breakfast will be served beginning at 7:30 AM.

Improve as a teacher, public speaker and leader by joining the UTHSC chapter (Brain Builders) of Toastmasters. A Toastmasters meeting is a learn-by-doing workshop in which participants hone their speaking and leadership skills in a no-pressure atmosphere. Free parking is available and everyone is welcome!

This year, TEDMED will bring together delegates in Washington, DC and San Francisco, CA to participate in a simultaneous, unified, digitally linked program that will be streamed live to 100+ countries. “Unlocking Imagination in Service of Health and Medicine” is the focus of TEDMED 2014 taking place September 10th-12th. TEDMED will  welcome some of the most respected names in science, journalism, education, business and technology to their stage.

IAMSE 2015 Meeting –  Call for Focus Sessions

The International Association of Medical Science Educators (IAMSE) is pleased to announce the call for focus sessions for the 19th Annual IAMSE Conference to be held in San Diego, CA from June 13-16, 2015. The IAMSE meeting offers opportunities for faculty development and networking, bringing together medical sciences and medical education across the continuum of health care education.

All abstracts must be submitted in the format requested through the online abstract submission site www.iamseconference.org.

Submission deadline is September 30, 2014. Abstract acceptance notifications will be returned by November 15.

However, it can be challenging to create discussion questions that engage students in critical thinking and encourage robust interaction. It is additionally challenging to assess different aspects of online discussion and provide students with meaningful qualitative and quantitative feedback. This webinar will provide strategies and tips for meeting these challenges.

TEDMED Archive Available – A Candid Conversation About Childhood Obesity

Date: This session took place July 22, 2014

Session Overview:

To cap off the 2013-14 summer series of Great Challenges Hangouts, TEDMED hosted a special live online discussion. Risa Lavizzo-Mourey, president and CEO of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, joined some of the nation’s top health and research leaders to take measure of the progress and challenges in our ongoing struggle with childhood obesity.

The national childhood obesity rate has leveled off. Cities and states that have been taking on this issue comprehensively are starting to see their childhood obesity rates drop. A CDC study published in February showed that national rates may be declining among our nation’s youngest children.

This is good news, but challenges remain. Rates are still far too high overall, and racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic disparities persist.

What needs to happen to show bigger results, faster? How do we make sure all children can grow up at a healthy weight? What are some of the underlying environmental and societal causes that must be addressed?  What could corporate, community and policy leaders do to further address this critical public health issue?

The conversation was moderated by Dr. Richard Besser, MD, Chief Health and Medical Editor for ABC News.

Defining Success with Learning Objectives

The sun is out (most days) and the temperature is heating up! Summer is here! Thoughts turn to cookouts, family vacations, and for many faculty members…creating or redesigning a course. An important component of any course design or redesign is the creation or modification of learning objectives.

What is a learning objective? Simply stated, a learning objective describes the knowledge and skills students will be expected to acquire within a specific time frame such as by the end of a course module/unit, course activity, or class session. Different learning objectives lead to different teaching activities. 

Learning objectives (also referred to as learning outcomes) can be classified in one of three domains:

  • Knowledge (or Cognitive domain)
  • Skills (or Psychomotor domain)
  • Attitude (or Affective domain)

Learning objectives must also be SMART:

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Achievable
  • Relevant
  • Timely

How about you? Will you be creating new or modifying existing learning objectives in the near future? There are numerous resources available to help educators better understand the role learning objectives play in student success. These resources can also assist in creating clearly stated learning objectives as well as designing appropriate teaching activities and assessments that align with those objectives. However, it can be challenging to create discussion questions that engage students in critical thinking and encourage robust interaction. It is additionally challenging to assess different aspects of online discussion and provide students with meaningful qualitative and quantitative feedback. This webinar will provide strategies and tips for meeting these challenges.

Session Overview:

The Office of Academic, Faculty, and Student Affairs (AFSA) will be hosting the New Faculty Orientation as a supplement to the orientation that is given by Human Resources at each faculty member’s hire date. The AFSA New Faculty Orientation is catered specifically to the faculty with introductions of people and resources that may be of help in their growth and advancement during their time of employment with UTHSC.

This session is for all new faculty hired since January 2014 who DID NOT attend New Faculty Orientation in March 2014.

A light breakfast will be served beginning at 7:30 AM.

Providing Effective Feedback

In last week’s blog post (Assessing Your Assessment Strategy), we discussed rubrics and how they can be utilized as part of your assessment strategy. Rubrics are certainly an important and valuable assessment tool. However, assessment can be delivered in other formats as well.

Providing verbal feedback can also play an important role in your overall assessment strategy.  Feedback can be delivered via a two-way conversation between the learner and instructor particularly in clinical settings. For feedback to be beneficial to the learner, it must be specific and focused on the behavior or performance observed. These conversations, if properly facilitated, can be very effective methods for assessing performance particularly in an active learning environment such as a clinical setting. Resources Available – Faculty Development Seminar: Active Learning and the Flipped Classroom

Dates:  Took place June 25 – 26, 2014 at UTHSC

Session Overview:

The UTHSC College of Medicine and the Office of Academic, Faculty and Student Affairs hosted a two-day seminar led by Deirdre Bonnycastle from the University of Saskatchewan College of Medicine. Ms. Bonnycastle has been involved in adult education and program development for 42 years. In her former position as a faculty member in the Extension Division, University of Saskatchewan, she researched the effects of disabilities on participation in university programs and worked extensively in the development of online credit courses. For the last 10 years, she has been responsible for faculty development at both the UGME and PGME level at the University of Saskatchewan College of Medicine and regularly delivers faculty development seminars on topics focusing on teaching in preclinical and clinical settings, incorporating active learning, and strategies for flipping the classroom.

Sessions that took place during this two-day seminar were interactive, required group discussion/work, and focused on:

  • Learning objectives (Creating student-centered learning objectives and creating assignments that align with learning objectives)
  • Creating an effective flipped learning environment (Using out of class time for teaching and how to use class time in a flipped classroom)

Assessing Your Assessment Strategy

We announced back in January  that 2014 would be The Year of Active Learning at UTHSC. In our weekly posts since the beginning of the year, we have shared several resources and ideas for incorporating active learning into the classes you teach whether it be face-to-face, hybrid, or fully online. As educators, we understand that any activity or project utilized within a course must tie into the overall course objectives and to student learning outcomes. But how can we ensure (and provide evidence) that each assignment, activity, or project leads to appropriate student learning outcomes and is properly aligned to the course objectives? Many instructors utilize rubrics as part of their assessment strategy.

Rubrics are valuable tools that assist instructors in not only assessing student learning outcomes but can also help in assessing the quality of a course as a whole. There are many resources available to help in designing rubrics including templates based on the item being assessed such as rubrics for assessing oral presentations, online discussion forums, or research projects.
