Interprofessional Education Conference: Let’s Start Talking – The importance of interprofessional communication in improving patient outcomes and safety

Overview:

The Interprofessional Education Conference organized by the HRSA Interprofessional Education Grant Team (UTHSC Colleges of Nursing and Dentistry) will examine the importance of interprofessional communication in improving patient outcomes and safety. The goal of IPE of health care providers is to provide evidence-based and comprehensive health care for diverse patient populations. Healthcare needs of patients often transcend the individual health care provider and encompass various roles played by an interprofessional team of health professionals.

Conference Objectives:

  • Describe the potential impact of interprofessional communication on patient outcomes and safety
  • Articulate the benefit of the use of technology in improving the communication among healthcare providers, patients, and/or caregivers
  • Examine the characteristics of an effective team communication scenario

Waves of interest and excitement in Interprofessional Education (IPE) are sweeping across health science schools, accrediting bodies, and national health agencies. In just the past two years in the US, national objectives have been produced and several centers for IPE have been created to assist faculty and practitioners in designing curricular programs and extending the outcomes into interprofessional practice. The Spring IAMSE webcast seminar series brings together a collection of leaders and programs that have implemented successful IPE activities and/or have unique approaches to addressing challenges that IPE may be facing in healthcare delivery.

Online discussion is a great way for students to connect and learn. But you can’t just set up a board and leave it there. Students need responses to their work to keep growing and learning. An unmonitored discussion board can lead to huge headaches and not much learning. This means you need effective strategies to keep students on task and promote truly educational online interaction.

Online Discussion: Practices to Boost Learning & Engagement will show you how to coach students toward meaningful discussion. By the end of the seminar, you’ll have the insights and tools you need to:

•    Employ alternative strategies to promote interaction and develop students’ online discussion skills
•    Compare and apply different discussion board formats to increase student interest and engagement
•    Identify and manage techniques to empower students as facilitators of online discussion

AIHC Leadership Webinar Series – Developing Faculty to Improve Quality of Care

Presenters: Les Hall, MD, FACP – University of South Carolina School of Medicine; Linda Headrick, MD, MS, FACP – University of Missouri

Overview:

Although quality improvement (QI) initiatives have helped to improve health care outcomes and safety in recent years, many faculty members feel ill-equipped to teach improvement skills to learners.

In this AIHC Leadership Series webinar, Dr. Linda Headrick and Dr. Les Hall will summarize a decade of experience in teaching QI to interprofessional health professions learners at the University of Missouri (Columbia, Mo). They will highlight faculty development strategies that accompanied a gradually enlarging portfolio of QI learning opportunities for health professions students, leading to an expanded pool of faculty members engaged in this arena.

The session will conclude with a brief description of two national initiatives, supported by the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation and the Association of American Medical Colleges, that seek to escalate the number of faculty leading education programs in quality improvement and patient safety.

Session Objectives:

  • Identify strategies to engage faculty members in the practice and teaching of quality improvement.
  • Articulate successful educational strategies to engage learners from multiple health professions in quality improvement initiatives.
  • Recognize how faculty members can use quality improvement as a means to simultaneously improve educational programs, improve systems of care and teach interprofessional teamwork.

Presenter: Robert Talbert, Ph.D. – Associate Professor Mathematics at Grand Valley State University

Overview:

A long-standing model for teaching consisted of two separate but mutually complementary parts. First, teachers would expose students to new course material in the classroom through lectures, audiovisual presentations, and other in-class demonstrations. Then, students would study and assimilate the lessons on their own—outside of class. But a different teaching paradigm is disrupting this traditional approach in dramatic ways. The shift has students introducing themselves to the material first and using class time to process what they’ve studied. In short, the plan for learning has flipped.

In this Magna 40-Minute Seminar, you’ll explore the different variations of flipped learning, see examples of each, and walk away with a model for flipped course design based on learning theory and backwards design. Topic: The Methodist Diabetes, Chronic Condition, and Wellness Registry – Creating Opportunities for Improving Population Health

Overview:

Mr. Villa and Dr. Steinberg will present the results of their work to develop the Diabetes Wellness and Prevention Registry. This data mart collects patient data from the Methodist South hospital and combines it with PCP and lab data from linked providers in the community. Data are presented to the user through a visual analytic interface.

Overview:

The Office of Academic, Faculty, and Student Affairs (AFSA) will be hosting New Faculty Orientation as a supplement to the orientation that is provided by Human Resources at each faculty member’s hire date. The AFSA New Faculty Orientation is catered specifically to the faculty with introductions of people and resources that may be of help in their growth and advancement during their time of employment with UTHSC.

This orientation is for ALL faculty hired as of September 2014 and in the months following. A light breakfast will be provided beginning at 7:30 AM. Orientation will begin at 8:00 AM.

This orientation will also include a lunch where faculty will have the opportunity to get into groups specific to their college to engage in discussion topics that are unique to that college. Along with the new faculty, this lunch will be open for all faculty hired as of July 2014 and in the months following (even if they’ve attended previous New Faculty Orientations). Lunch will be from 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM.

New Faculty Orientation

Date: March 27, 2015 (Friday)

Location: SAC (Student Alumni Center) – OD Larry Dining Hall

Overview:

The Office of Academic, Faculty, and Student Affairs (AFSA) will be hosting New Faculty Orientation as a supplement to the orientation that is provided by Human Resources at each faculty member’s hire date. The AFSA New Faculty Orientation is catered specifically to the faculty with introductions of people and resources that may be of help in their growth and advancement during their time of employment with UTHSC.

This orientation is for ALL faculty hired as of September 2014 and in the months following. A light breakfast will be provided beginning at 7:30 AM. Orientation will begin at 8:00 AM.

This orientation will also include a lunch where faculty will have the opportunity to get into groups specific to their college to engage in discussion topics that are unique to that college. Along with the new faculty, this lunch will be open for all faculty hired as of July 2014 and in the months following (even if they’ve attended previous New Faculty Orientations). Lunch will be from 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM.

BIG Meeting – Genotation: Actionable knowledge to the scientific reader

Presenter: Panduka Nagahawatte (Staff Scientist – UTHSC Center for Biomedical Informatics)

Overview:

A current day scientist has to read journal articles as a part of their daily life in order to make informed decisions with their biomedical research. When reading such an article, they have to refer to external sources in order to find supplementary information for genetics related terms such as gene names, mutations, and proteins. According to the 2014 Nucleic Acid Research database survey, there are 1552 such online molecular biology databases available to the scientific community. The sheer number of databases make it difficult for scientists to search and gather collective, actionable knowledge on the Internet. Genotation is a journal article viewer designed to assist scientific readers by seamlessly integrating relevant knowledge from biomedical databases with a journal article.

For several years, Mr. Nagahawatte has integrated data from biomedical databases such as NCBI Gene, dbSNP, PharmGKB, KEGG and HGNC for software that is used to make medical decisions based on NextGen sequencing methods. Based on that experience, Mr. Nagahawatte developed Genotation that cross-links terms in documents with many biomedical databases, which will be the topic for his presentation.

We will use Barr’s modification of the Kirkpatrick evaluation framework to focus on other methods of assessment for IPE/IPC.  This webinar will be a two-part series that focuses on specific measurement tools and case studies from the field that will provide participants with information on how tools are developed, validated, and used to provide quality assessment data.

Overview:

Development of national competencies for interprofessional education (IPE) has brought national attention to interprofessional collaboration (IPC). Most schools, training programs, and universities are implementing IPE to fulfill accreditation standards.  However, creating an assessment plan for IPE is also important.  The majority of scholarship around IPE has focused on changes in learners attitudes regarding IPC.  There has been intensifying interest to assess IPE beyond attitudinal measures.

We will use Barr’s modification of the Kirkpatrick evaluation framework to focus on other methods of assessment for IPE/IPC.  This webinar will be a two-part series that focuses on specific measurement tools and case studies from the field that will provide participants with information on how tools are developed, validated, and used to provide quality assessment data.

New Faculty Orientation

Date: March 27, 2015 (Friday)

Location: SAC (Student Alumni Center) – OD Larry Dining Hall

Overview:

The Office of Academic, Faculty, and Student Affairs (AFSA) will be hosting New Faculty Orientation as a supplement to the orientation that is provided by Human Resources at each faculty member’s hire date. The AFSA New Faculty Orientation is catered specifically to the faculty with introductions of people and resources that may be of help in their growth and advancement during their time of employment with UTHSC.

This orientation is for ALL faculty hired as of September 2014 and in the months following. A light breakfast will be provided beginning at 7:30 AM. Orientation will begin at 8:00 AM.

This orientation will also include a lunch where faculty will have the opportunity to get into groups specific to their college to engage in discussion topics that are unique to that college. Along with the new faculty, this lunch will be open for all faculty hired as of July 2014 and in the months following (even if they’ve attended previous New Faculty Orientations). Lunch will be from 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM.

Series Overview:

Waves of interest and excitement in Interprofessional Education (IPE) are sweeping across health science schools, accrediting bodies, and national health agencies. In just the past two years in the US, national objectives have been produced and several centers for IPE have been created to assist faculty and practitioners in designing curricular programs and extending the outcomes into interprofessional practice.
